Shelby Brogdon, OD presents on Rinsada at AAOPT 2025: Allergies
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dr. Shelby Brogdon, OD, Presented Novel Approach to Allergic Conjunctivitis at the 2025 American Academy of Optometry Meeting in Boston
Boston, MA — October 2025 — Dr. Shelby Brogdon, OD, presented an innovative clinical case at the American Academy of Optometry Annual Meeting (AAOpt 2025) in Boston, showcasing a new interventional approach to the management of allergic conjunctivitis using an irrigating eyelid retractor to perform ocular lavage.
The presentation, titled “Ocular Lavage Facilitated by an Irrigating Eyelid Retractor in Management of Allergic Conjunctivitis,” described a successful case in which targeted lavage helped remove allergens directly from antigen-presenting cells within the palpebral conjunctiva — resulting in rapid and sustained improvement in ocular inflammation and symptoms.
Purpose: The case highlighted a novel interventional approach for allergic conjunctivitis (AC) using an irrigating eyelid retractor to perform ocular lavage, offering an additional therapeutic tool alongside standard topical treatments.
Case Summary: A 41-year-old female presented with a three-week history of ocular itchiness, redness, pain, and swelling that had shown minimal improvement with topical corticosteroids and antihistamines. Examination revealed diffuse conjunctival injection, staining, and papillary reaction. Dr. Brogdon performed an in-office ocular lavage using the Rinsada® irrigating eyelid retractor (Wildwood, PA). The patient was then treated with preservative-free artificial tears, olopatadine BID, and a tapered course of topical prednisolone.
At a three-week follow-up, the patient reported marked relief of itching and swelling, with significant resolution of conjunctival inflammation and papillary response. Systemic evaluations ruled out other inflammatory or autoimmune causes.
Conclusion: The case demonstrated that combining Rinsada with topical corticosteroids and antihistamines may improve outcomes by addressing allergens earlier in the allergic cascade. This integrative approach represents a promising adjunct for managing refractory allergic conjunctivitis.
“This interventional approach to allergic conjunctivitis shows that mechanical allergen removal through Rinsada can accelerate recovery and minimize the need for prolonged steroid therapy,” said Dr. Brogdon. “It’s an efficient, well-tolerated procedure that fits naturally into clinical practice.”
